Cambridge Best Retail Practices Program

Published on January 29, 2014, by in Uncategorized.

A great way to access grant money for your small business

Wednesday, Feb. 12, 8-10 a.m. City Hall Annex, Community Room, 344 Broadway, Cambridge.

The City of Cambridge Community Development Department will be offering a free Best Retail Practices Program to assist retailers, restaurateurs and storefront  business owners in Cambridge. Best Retail Practices (BRP) brings professional advice to independent retailers in the areas of store and restaurant design, layout and visual merchandising, customer service and both traditional and social media marketing through workshops and one-on-one consultations.
Retail expert Christine Moynihan will present the free workshop and conduct the individual consultations. Since 2003, she has brought the “tips, tools and tricks of the trade” of this program to over 1,000 business owners across the state and provided specific recommendations to over 350 shops, salons and restaurants. Following the workshop, qualified owners of shops, restaurants and store front service businesses in Cambridge may apply to be one of the businesses that will receive a free one-on-one, in-store consultation session with Moynihan  These businesses will then receive a written report with specific ideas and recommendations for improving their businesses now and for the future.

Qualifying businesses will also have the opportunity to apply for up to $2,000 in federal grants to implement recommended improvements. Criteria for the consultations and eligibility to receive the grant money will be explained at the workshop.

For more information on the workshop, consultations and grants, and to register for the workshop, please contact Pardis Saffari at: 617-349-4654 or

Seating is limited and registration is recommended for this highly popular program.

East Cambridge Customer Intercept Survey Report

Published on January 16, 2014, by in Uncategorized.

In September 2013, the City of Cambridge’s Economic Development Department conducted a customer intercept survey of East Cambridge.  The area included Cambridge St from Columbia all the way to First St.  With the help of the ECBA and a number of volunteers, we surveyed almost 300 Cambridge Street visitors and asked them how they felt about the local businesses. The results of the survey were compiled and the City of Cambridge Just released the report.

We will be working with the Economic Development Department to organize a community meeting where we can share and explain the results.  We hope that this survey will provide current businesses and entrepreneurs the insight they need to continue the successful retail history that has made East Cambridge such a great place to live and do business.

Happy Holiday’s from ECBA!

Published on December 17, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!
It has certainly been a very busy year for ECBA. We welcomed 21 new members to the ECBA this year raising our membership to 79 local business. With our members support we added a second great ECBA event to the neighborhood. The ECBA Freedom was a great success in its inaugural year and 1000 patriotic runners joined us on Memorial Day to kick off the summer and raise some money for the Glen Doherty Foundation. We are planning for this year so make it your new years resolution to start training for an East Cambridge 5k.

Rib Fest was another smashing success thanks to the many great chefs opening new restaurants in the neighborhood and thanks to all of you for coming out and joining the fun on another beautiful October afternoon.
We are very proud of the new holiday decoration adorning Cambridge St this season and look forward to finding new ways to make Cambridge St an attractive place to live and do business.
Thanks for all the support this year and we look forward to having a great year in 2014.

Deck The Halls

Published on December 12, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

ECBA is very excited to announce that our new Holiday décor for Cambridge Street is up and powered on.  It has been a longtime goal of the ECBA, pretty much from the day we started 5 years, to spruce up the street for the holiday season.  Winter greens and sparkling lights can go a long way in improving the street scape and creating a pleasant atmosphere for businesses and shoppers alike.  We hope this adds to the holiday experience for residents, visitors, and shop owners.

We couldn’t have achieved this goal without the support of all of our members, businesses owners that recognize the value of reinvesting in our community in small yet significant ways.  Also, its thanks to you, and many other East Cambridge residents, who have supported the ECBA in various ways throughout the years.  Whether you bought a ticket to Rib Fest or ran in Freedom Run, you played a role in making this improvement in the neighborhood.  Simply stated … THANK YOU!

The beautiful baskets themselves were arranged by our very own Blossom Floral Design located on Cambridge St at the corner of Sciarrappa. Be sure to stop in and tell Susana  and Tony what a great job they did.  The baskets were hung with the help of the Department of Public Works, and the City Electricians powered the lights.  Thanks to all for the group effort.

We hope this is just a start to an ongoing project we can add to each year and look forward to finding new ways to improve the appeal of Cambridge Street for everyone.
