Experience Cuba’s vibrant artistic culture through Art, Literature and Dance: enjoy the current visual art exhibition in the Upper Gallery showcasing four Cuban artists, listen to author Raul Villarreal talk about memories of Hemingway’s life in Cuba, follow the dancers to the Theater to experience several popular Cuban and Latin dances! The evening will include:
6:30 – 8:30 PM
Book presentation: Hemingway’s Cuban Son
Author Raúl Villarreal presents Hemingway’s Cuban Son, a book based on memories of his father René, who was not only Hemingway’s longtime majordomo in Cuba, but also his confidant and a friend. Villarreal’s clear recollections offer up humorous stories of escapades and adventures with Hemingway as well as insightful comments on the writer’s work habits, moods, passions, and friendships. He also writes of Cuba before and after the revolution, capturing so well the sense of place and time. Presented in collaboration with Latin Art Space.
Open bar and complementary appetizers in the Upper Gallery to accompany the event from 6:30 to 8:00pm
8:00 – 10:00 PM
Connect to the intoxicating rhythms with live and recorded music, and engage directly with interactive dance performances, where dances from MetaMovements (Anara Frank and DJ Jay Salsa) perform beautiful traditional and contemporary Latin American dances (including salsa, bachata, merengue, as well as Afro-Cuban Orisha “Elegua” and a spirited Rumba), and invite the audience to learn the rhythm or try the steps. To close the show, you will witness the spectacular Cuban rueda, or “wheel” of salsa. Invented in the 1950s in Havana, that is sometimes described as “salsa meets square dancing” because of the entertaining caller who shouts out the moves as the dancers trade partners in fancy turn patterns. Also, enjoy a captivating perspective of history, perfect for all audiences. Presented in collaboration with Metamovements.
Cash bar from 8:00 to 9:30pm.
On view till July 15, 2013, in the Upper Gallery
Heavily influenced by their Cuban heritage and upbringing, four New York-based Cuban visual artists (Clara Morera, Cepp Selgas, Bernardo Navarro, and Jorge Valdés) explore African icons, folklore and religious syncretization through a variety of media including acrylic on canvas and paper, assemblages of found objects, mosaics and mix media artworks. Curated by Astrid Martinez-Jones of Latin Art Space. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10:30 – 6pm, and during Theater events.

Also thank you to DPW for their work in ordering them and getting them hung and keeping them healthy through the long and hot season.
If you want to show your appreciation stop by a local business displaying our membership stickers and say thanks for making Cambridge St a pleasant place to walk down.

Thank you to everyone that made the 1st Annual ECBA Freedom Run a huge success. We had over 1000 runners take part in this years event. Thank you to all our volunteers who worked hard all morning to make sure we had a great event. Thanks to Cambridge 5k who organized a great run and thank you the Cambridgeside Galleria Mall for all their support in making the event a reality.
Most importantly, thank you to all those who have served our country and those who are currently serving. Memorial Day is about you and the sacrifices you make for all of us. Hopefully Freedom Run serves as a reminder to what this day is all about.
In this spirit ECBA is going to donate a portion of Freedom Run proceeds to the Glen Doherty Foundation. Glen was a Navy SEAL who died while serving his country. Consider making your own donation to his foundation this Memorial Day.
Thanks again to everyone who made the Freedom Run another great day in East Cambridge. Hope to see you all next year. We will be posting more pictures of the day soon.
